Water Vapor Barrier Film / Moisture Barrier Film

A Water vapor barrier (or vapour barrier) is any material used for damp proofing, typically a plastic or foil sheet, that resists diffusion of moisture through the packaging to prevent interstitial condensation. Technically, many of these materials are only vapor retarders as they have varying degrees of permeability.

Materials used in flexible packaging have a specified moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR). Materials such as foil, LLDPE, and PVDC have excellent moisture barrier properties. We’ll work with you to custom-engineer a flexible packaging structure that will protect your products from moisture.

Materials have a moisture vapor transmission rate that is established by standard test methods. One common set of units is g/m²·day or g/100in²·day. Permeability can be reported in perms, a measure of the rate of transfer of water vapor through a material (1.0 US perm = 1.0 grain/square-foot·hour·inch of mercury ≈ 57 SI perm = 57 ng/s·m2·Pa).

The function of a moisture barrier film is to retard the migration of water vapor, which is not typically intended to retard the migration of air. When air is mixed with water vapor, it moves from location to location due to an air pressure difference, the vapor moves with it.

The ability of a package to control the permeation and penetration of gasses is vital for many types of products. Tests are often conducted on the packaging materials but also on the completed packages, after being subjected to flexing, handling, vibration, or temperature. Major test as, Package testing, Moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR), Oxygen transmission rate (OTR) and Carbon dioxide transmission rate.

Barrier layer materials:

The outer support layer is often surprisingly thin, and the middle barrier layer can sometimes be of microscopic thickness. Because it is the compostion of the barrier material, and not its thickness that is most functioning in determining its permeability. Metal foil, usually aluminum foil is generally the most effective vapor barrier material, closely followed closely by transparent ceramic barriers. Vacuum metalized film (sputtered aluminum), EVOH, barrier nylon(PVDC coated) are transparent plastic barrier layers often used in the food industry. The barrier layer of aluminium oxide (AlOx) is similar in composition to Teflon, and is considered an effective moisture/oxygen barrier comparing to foil laminates. Each specific barrier material and formulation has it's own unique barrier properties. Here under listed Haide barrier film options.

Choosing the right film:

When deciding which barrier film is correct for your application, these factors must be considered:

●What kind of microclimate do you wish to maintain? Since different level of Oxygen and moisture transmission varies by different selection of film and lamination.

●How long do you wish to maintain the shelf life period? There's no reason to use the most effective film if you need only maintain a controlled atmosphere for a few week, but long term storage demands better barrier properties since the vapor transmission rate varies by different barrier film.

●Do you fill nitrogen or vacuum the packaging? How will you maintain the microclimate? An active system is more forgiving than one based on passive absorbents.

●Do you need visual inspections of the enclosed objects such as window on pouches? What level barrier film will be right or foil based films are opaque.

●The right barrier film materials or structure costs matter? While materials are usually the least expensive part of a project, cost savings could be substantial in a large project. We'll be pro to help you determine the best structure should be applied for your needs.

Applications:

Moisture/Vapor Barrier films are used for storage of high moisture sensitive materials, like Sugar, confectionery, dry food, nuts & seeds, organic food, snack food, pop corn, puffed food, freeze dried fruit & power and dried Pet food, etc. but may also be used as a barrier layer to isolate showcase interiors from the showcase material. Moisture Barrier films are used for diaphragms when creating moisture-free packaging structure.
